Hohenburg
Hohenburg castle sits high above the town on a basalt cone. In the Thirty Years War, the castle was attacked by imperial troops and surrendered after great opposition. At this time, the legend of the White Woman also arose. A woman had fallen into the well and poisoned the water, so the castle could not be defended due to the water shortage. After its destruction in the Thirty Years War, the castle was not rebuilt again.
Since 1936, the local community has been engaged in the preservation of the castle ruins and the investigation of the castle history. For example, the castle well was uncovered and the horse stable cellar restored. From the look-out tower restored in 1958, you can enjoy a broad vista over North Hesse.
