The Historical Old Town of Lügde

History comes alive in the historical old town of Lügde. The urban landscape is shaped by picturesque half-timbered houses, cosy alleys and historical ramparts that surround the entire town centre. Up to the year 1668, Lügde was a fortified centre for the territorial politics of the Earls of Pyrmont. They expanded the location as a “fortress town”. A 1.5-km-long town wall with ramparts and seven defence towers was erected. After the defensive structures were no longer required, the walls were nevertheless retained as a protective measure against flooding. Two of the defence towers as well as the complete town wall therefore still exist. Lügde is one of the best-preserved agricultural towns in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Numerous historical buildings, such as the former Franciscan monastery and the impressive St. Mary's Church make a visit to the old town a special experience.
